First impressions are critical in life, as they are in the music industry. Those introduced to Coheed and Cambria many years ago might have asked themselves who this chick with the crazy voice was. Then they might have asked how someone can hope to be successful while playing a complex kind of music behind that crazy chick voice. Those people either stopped there and moved on to easier-to-swallow fluff or they took a closer look, and realized it was not crazy music or a female vocalist, but instead the boisterous pipes of one Claudio Sanchez, lead guitar and main maestro with the vocal chords of a space seraphim. They also realized that the music is deceptively difficult, as many threads of Coheed’s music is punk and pop done well, without all the messy angst getting in the way. A decade later, the line is clearly drawn in the dirt but many more have come to understand the brilliance behind this New York quartet.
