Epocrates to cease support for older Windows Mobile, Palm PDAs?

A few readers have mentioned an email they received from Epocrates yesterday: The notice informs users of “older Palm and Windows Mobile devices” that Epocrates is beginning to phase out support for their devices. While the missive does not include a time line for the phasing out process, it appears that PDA users are still able to purchase Epocrates software from the company’s website. As of this writing, there is no mention of the change in supported devices on the company’s website either.

Some of the recipients of the email from Epocrates were particularly miffed that the company offered them a discount on their software if the user buys an iPod touch: “We want to help you get there, so we’ve created a great deal for you – get an iPod touch with our premium Epocrates Essentials software for just $199! It doesn’t require a new carrier and is a perfect complement to a cell phone you may have already. Just enter code in the shopping cart to get the deal.”

Bottomline: Who didn’t know this day was coming? I think the real question is — is now the right time to stop supporting these older devices? Epocrates has been churning out surveys related to which devices people use to access their software. iPhones, iPods and BlackBerry typically lead the pack. Is that reason enough to cut off the other devices?

I have reached out to Epocrates for more information and hope to provide more about their timeline for ceasing support for the older devices soon. Given that the company is still selling their software for these older devices, you would imagine this cease in support would not occur during the next year.

A: The last Palm unit I had was a Sony Clie TH55. I loved that unit, but it just couldn't meet my current requirements and needs. That is why I've gone towards a Windows Mobile device. It's much more robust in functionality than the Palm. Surprisingly, it's very stable (especially with WM6.1). I also think Palm is dead (stopped at OS 5.x). No further development from them except Centro (I think that's what it's called). But even that is nothing more than a repackaged OS 5.x (Garnet they called it). Even now, Palm is developing Smartphones running Windows Mobile.

I have never used a Blackberry and therefore cannot comment. Though I have heard it is a good overall device and stability is better than a Windows powered PDA.

Currently, I myself love the Dell Axim x51v. Too bad it's been discontinued. But demand for it hasn't diminished either. Even when it's discontinued, many users have said this it the best overall PDA ever made. The closest and current PDA that comes and slightly exceeds (not by much) its specs would be the HP211.

i think that Palm is not good. iphone sucks too. i have many problems working with strategic marketing and survey i costumers do for telephone companies in an effort to improve service and from what I hear is not good. Q: I currently use Palm PDA for my calendar, contacts, memos, to do etc. I am purchasing a Blackberry and would like to know how to transfer all my data from the Palm PDA.

A: You can use the software that blackberry provides with all there New Devices. (The CD will come in the box)
Its the "Blackberry Desktop Manager". There is a option called "Switch Device Wizard" that will allow you to Import your Data from either a Palm device or a Windows Mobile powered device to a Blackberry Device. (Both devices must be connected to your computer)
So once both devices are connected, it will start the process.

You won't transfer data directly from the Palm to the BlackBerry. What you will need to do is sync the Palm to a PIM application like Microsoft Outlook. Then, you will sync Outlook with the new BlackBerry. I don't believe there is a way (other than a possible third-party application) to get all the data from one device to another.
