Therapeutic equestrian group offers acrobatic Olympic sport
May 10, 2011Just south of Palm Beach County at Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, kids with physical, mental and emotional challenges are doing amazing things on horseback.
A group of riders at Horses and the Handicapped of South Florida have taken up vaulting, an acrobatic Olympic sport involving balancing on the horse as it moves . The sport has been modified by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association to help children and adults with their balance, coordination and confidence. H&H Program Director Alison Plaza started the program to help a shy girl named Caroline.
"Six years ago, Caroline came to us," Plaza said. "She had emotional and cognitive needs. She really needed to be good at something to increase her self-confidence. I asked her what she would like to do. Gymnastics came up and the thought of vaulting immediately followed. I gave her the American Vaulting Association website and told her to go look at some videos and check back in with me if it was something she'd like to try. The next week, she came running into the barn. She was so excited. She asked me if I thought she could do it. I said 'I know you can do it.' "
