Carriers At The End Of Their (Free) Tether

The free tethering ride may be over for customers of three of the big four U.S. carriers. AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA are now blocking free wireless tethering apps for Android phones on Google's Android Market, according to several reports.

Sprint Nextel is reportedly the only major carrier that isn't blocking free tethering, which allows Android phone users to turn their Web-ready handsets into mobile hotspots which can service other devices without having to pay extra carrier fees.

"[I]t it looks like your days of 'stealing data' are about to come to an end," writes DroidLife, which began investigating the blocking of free tethering apps on the Android Market several days ago.

Blocks on apps supporting tethering for three of the four major carriers have been confirmed by several sources.
